International Self Care Day: Removing the Barriers to Better Self Care

International Self Care Day: Removing the Barriers to Better Self Care

Every year on 24th July, International Self Care Day reminds us to pause and prioritise our wellbeing. Between work, family commitments, social plans and everything in between, looking after ourselves is often the first thing to slip down the list.

"I just don't have time!"

We've all said it. But if we're honest, what we usually mean is, "I don't have a lot of time" (or the energy). Luckily, building better self-care habits doesn't take much of either.

Finished a gym session? Spend five minutes recovering. Been sitting at a desk all day? Give your neck and shoulders a quick massage. On your feet all day? Spend an extra minute looking after them after your shower.

On their own, these habits seem small, but together they're an investment in the person you'll be tomorrow.

But how do you build these habits without adding a lot of time or effort to your day?

The Answer is Simple:

Self-care isn't about finding more time, it's about making smarter use of the time you already have. Here's what that looks like:

Whether you've spent the day at your desk, on-site, in the garden or playing five-a-side, tired muscles can quickly leave you feeling stiff, uncomfortable and less motivated to stay active. The longer you ignore them, the more they can get in the way of everyday life.

Taking just a couple of minutes to stretch or massage those areas before or after your day can make all the difference.

Tools Don't Get Tired!

Sometimes, it's not time that's stopping us, it's energy!

When you don't feel like massaging tired muscles yourself, a massage gun does the hard work for you. It's a quick, portable way to keep your muscles feeling looked after without taking over your schedule.

The same goes for your oral care. We've all had those late nights out (or even worse, the morning hangover), when it's easy to start cutting corners with your brushing and flossing.

That's where the right tools make all the difference. An electric toothbrush delivers the same consistent speed and power every time, while a built-in 2-minute timer (like ours) helps make sure you're brushing for the recommended time, every time! Even when your brain isn't fully awake.

Turn Routines into Rituals

Finally, remember that self-care doesn't have to feel like another chore.

Turn your evening shower or bath into a moment for yourself. Light a candle, slow down and unwind. After your feet have soaked, spend a minute with a foot file (an electric one makes the job even easier), then finish with a moisturiser, relaxing foot massage or reflexology.

You'll leave the bathroom with softer, more comfortable feet, and a calmer mind.

Consistency Beats Perfection.

The truth is, self care doesn't have to be complicated. Start with small actions that naturally fit into your day, whether that's adding a couple of minutes to a routine you already have or using tools that save you time and energy. Small habits really can improve your quality of life, you just have to stay consistent.

You don't need more time. You don't need more effort. You just need to make the little moments count.
